On the Be Ready Stage at the recent AG CONNECT Expo, Jim Patrico, senior editor of DTN/The Progressive Farmer, talked with three Case IH experts about managing agronomic challenges in 2013. In our last post, we included video featuring main points from their discussion on soil compaction.
In today’s video, we hear about the importance of options to manage crop residue for a variety of different needs. Sharing their insights are Rob Zemenchik, Case IH Tillage Marketing Manager; Nate Weinkauf, Case IH Combines Marketing Manager; and Dale Simpson, Case IH Seeders Marketing Manager.
Highlights from their conversation include:
- Determining what operational and agronomic questions to ask to choose the best implement and practice for managing crop residue
- Making adjustments in the field for residue uniformity
- Using vertical tillage to size and mix residue in fall and spring
- Crop residue inconsistencies affecting emergence
- Using crop residue as a valuable nutrient pool
- The importance of keeping an open mind to different practices, including cover crops
What new practices are you utilizing to take advantage of crop residue?
Stay tuned for our next post that wraps up our agronomic challenges series and discusses shifting crop patterns and practices.
Crop residue VAR application. How about creating an option that gathers residue from the combine (like the old Foster Wagons) and hold on level terrain and disperse on the slope? Control could be from VAR map or a simple turn and bank switch. When the holding area is full, spread as normal. Over time, we end up with increasing the residue on the generally poor yielding slopes and cut residue on the flat areas.
