With harvest winding down, it’s important to take care of the precision-farming data you gathered throughout the season so it’s ready for analysis. We sat down with Leo Bose, Case IH Advanced Farming Systems (AFS) Marketing Manager, to get his recommendations on year-end data management:
Q. If I’m still working to wrap up harvest, what in-season tips will help make data management easier?
A. Develop a habit of regularly processing and creating backups of your data throughout the season. Processing data regularly will confirm the yield monitor system is working properly. Regular backups help ensure your data is safe and recoverable if the primary storage device is lost, stolen or damaged.[Tweet “You finished harvest. Q. Is the memory stick still the best way to move data?
A. While you can utilize the memory stick as you traditionally have, AFS Connect™ telematics with Two-way File Transfer offers an easy, automatic, wireless way to transfer data from the vehicle to a secure cloud. It’s great peace of mind, too, because it lessens the worry about remembering to make manual backups. Your local Case IH dealer can provide more information about AFS Connect.
Q. OK, I’m finished with harvest. What’s my next step?
A. Process all remaining field data and create a final backup. Store your data on an external hard drive or other storage device, but not the computer that holds the processed data. It’s best to store your backups off-site. This can help prevent a complete data loss in the event of fire or theft.
If you take the time now to erase and/or format the removable memory device (USB stick) by using a PC, you’ll know that the device is empty and ready for next year.
Q. Do I need to do anything with my display?
A. As with the removable memory device, it’s best to clear your display so it’s ready for next year. Use the Data Management > Delete screen to delete existing data from the AFS Pro 700 display. Choose one of these methods:
Recommended method: Delete data at the Grower level. This erases all logged data in the display, including Grower, Farm and Field structure, plus all yield and moisture data and boundaries, guidance lines and recorded obstacles. When it’s time to prepare for next year, use a desktop software program to export setup information to the display.
Alternate method: Delete data at the Task level. This erases all existing yield and moisture data, but retains Grower, Farm and Field structure, including boundaries, guidance lines and recorded obstacles. Use this method only if you are certain you will be reusing the same Grower, Farm, and Field structure during the next season, or if you do not have a desktop software program to export that data to your display.
Use the Data Management > Delete screen to clear existing data from your AFS Pro 700 display, and you’ll be ready for a fresh start next spring.
Case IH AFS Mapping and Records data management software can help analyze your fields. Or choose to share your data with your agronomist, crop consultant or other adviser. Most important, you can rest assured you’ve expanded your knowledge base about your farming operation. And that can help you make better decisions in the years to come.
